Boys learn early in life not to reveal their feelings, and as a result, their humanity, existence, and social capacities are stripped away. Many studies now reveal that loneliness, suicide rates, serious despair, and difficult social contact among males are all affected. According to a Harvard study, persons who had warmer, tighter relationships lived longer, developed chronic diseases less quickly, and had better health for longer on average than those who didn't. Can you envision the prospect of exploring the option of speaking out about our troubles or being vulnerable with strangers, partners, friends, and family without the stigma that boys who communicate about their feelings face in society?
This is a picture of one of my nephews, who is growing up in a patriarchal world, and all I can hope for is that as he gets older, he feels encouraged to share his views with us.
